Drills Help

The 'Drills' menu option is only available after you have logged into the system. Note that your login session has an inactivity timeout of 20 minutes. After 20 minutes of no activity, you will be required to log into the system again.

Main Drills Page

This page is used to select the type of drill you would like to do.

1 Choose either the kanji or vocabulary card deck. The available lists will change depending on your selection.
2 Select the option to enter either study mode or drill mode.

3 Check this box and the flash cards will be displayed in sequential order rather then randomly. This option is only available in study mode.
4 This option box will only appear for vocabulary drills. Choose the format that you want the words in for the questions and answers.
5 Choose a list of kanji from one of a number of pre-defined lists. Each list name will be followed by the number of cards in the list.
Only the 'Demo' list will be available for non subscribed users.
6 Enter the number of cards you would like generated for this drill. Individual cards may be repeated in the deck but the deck is generated so that those cards that you are weakest with are most likely to appear. The maximum number of cards is currently 100.
7 Click this button to start the drill.

Study Drill

The Study Drill is used to study the various readings for each kanji. You also use this drill to select which kanji readings will be tested in the 'Test Readings' drill.

1 This section displays the next kanji in the drill along with various statistics for the kanji.
2 Each kanji will have up to two readings tables. The first table will be for On-Yomi readings while the 2nd table will contain Kun-Yomi and Okurigana readings.
3 The drill checkbox indicates if this reading will be included in the 'Test Readings' drill or not. Check the reading to have it included in future tests.
4 The kanji's reading is displayed in this column. On-Yomi readings are in Katakana while the other readings will be displayed in Hiragana.
5 The English definition of the reading displayed. If this reading is Okurigana then all the different definitions will be displayed in a drop-down list box.
6 This column displays sample compounds using this reading. If there are multiple samples for a reading then a drop-down box of all the sample compounds will be displayed.
Note that the compound is also followed by its reading in hiragana.
7 Displays your current score for this reading from the 'Test Readings' drill. Hover over the score percent to see the number of attempts and correct answers.
8 Use this button to update your selection of readings to test. This button is only available if you have changed one of the 'Drill' checkboxes.
9 Clicking this button will advance you to the next kanji in the deck.
10 Your current position in the flashcard deck is displayed here.
11 Please feel free to suggest additional sample compounds for a reading.

Test Kanji Readings Drill

The Test Readings Drill is used to test your knowledge of the readings for each kanji. See the help section for 'Study Drill' for help on any items that are not covered in this section.

1 The Drill checkbox will contain a check for those readings that are part of the test for this kanji.
2 Type in the kana answer for this readings. As you type in romaji, the text will automatically be converted to Katakana for On-Yomi readings and to Hiragana for all other readings.
You should review the Romaji-Kana Conversion Chart to see how conversion works.
3 After you have typed in all your answers, click this button to check your results.
4 Incorrect results will be displayed in red and the correct answer will be displayed next to your answer.
5 A reading will be disabled if the reading is not included in the test.
6 Correct answers will be displayed in Green.
7 Displays your score for this reading from all previous tests.
8 Use this button to proceed to the next kanji once your answers have been checked.

Study Vocabulary Drill

The following table is displayed for the vocabulary study drill. The title of the table will remind you which list you're studying.

1 The Hide links will allow you to hide the selected column of words. Once a column is hidden, another link will be displayed which will allow you to return to this default setting.
2 Your current score for this word is displayed in this column. Move the mouse over the score to see a pop-up off how many times the word has been tested.
3 The display can be changed to display between 1 and 20 words at a time. Click the Refresh button to update the page after you're changed the grid size.
4 The Next button will take you to the next page of vocabulary.
5 The status line displays how many words you have viewed and the size of the deck.

Drill Vocabulary Drill

The following table is displayed for the vocabulary drills. The title of the table will remind you which list is being tested.

1 The question word is displayed in the format you selected on the drill setup page.
2 An empty text box will be used for typing in your answer. The input will automatically be English, hiragana or katakana depending on what's appropriate for the answer.
3 This is the correct answer. It will only be displayed once the 'Check Answer' button is clicked.
4 Click this button to check your answer. The answer text box will change to green or red depending on whether your answer is correct or not. The solution will also appear next to your answer and your score will be updated.
5 Click to move to the next vocabulary word.
6 The status line displays how many cards remain in the test deck.
7 Your current score for this word is displayed in this column. Move the mouse over the score to see a pop-up off how many times the word has been tested.
